I think of Under Milk Wood as a
happening. We drop into these people’s lives and get to know them and learn
about their day-to-day activities and then we leave their lives. It’s not a
traditional linear narrative. A radio play, subtitled a play for voices, Dylan Thomas called it, was meant to be listened to — so we really wanted to focus on the
story and the characters and making it a listening experience. So we it’s been
beneficial to go at the show in in this way and really focus all our energies on
telling a story without things, with the voice. You know what can we create
with the voice and make live and breathe? I hope Under Milk Wood will remind
people of the beauty that is inherent in the small things in life. The gift of
under Milk Wood is the gift of rediscovering the power of language and
of the voice in a world that has become about tweets and texting how we feel, and
speaking in monosyllabic phrases Under Milk Wood is truly a gift.
