TEEN ART ATAC!

(Music) At a time when many teens are trying desperately to fit in, these Allen High School students are letting their creativity stand out. It’s thanks in part to the Allen Teen Arts Council, a group showcasing local talent through nights of music poetry and even fashion. Let’s get this show on the road. Today we’re here for the Spring Bash. All the outfits, all of the live music, the slam poetry and the art that’s being sold is all created by local teenage artists. I have been hearing about the Allen Teen Arts Council bashes since about my sophomore year. And I came out, it was just really cool to watch you know a bunch of people that I knew and I went to school with doing the things they love and doing the things that they were like very obviously passionate for. (Singing) I wanted it to be organic enough that what they’re interested in is what they’re doing. (Singing) And we kind of run ourselves, we have one advisor, that’s really it. I mean, aside from that we run everything. I wanted it to be their work, their ideas, their creativity. It’s just really an experience that is very gratifying for people that are on the more creative end of the spectrum. I’ve got new friends, people with the same interests and similar interests. Cause I like being around artistic people and this is one of the best ways to find people and be in the circle. One of them said to me, “You know, I feel so lost in this high school. I don’t really fit in, but when I’m here I’m part of something.” And that was something that we actually created, like a space where they felt like they belonged. One of the things that we do is we like kind of help encourage each other to explore like different mediums. I’ve got heavily exposed to slam poetry. She will hate you if you tell her she’s got bad music taste, but you’ll find yourself falling deeper into Wonderland when you see the songs drive her to dance. It’s a very interesting way to look at writing and see that there’s a way to perform it. (Singing) It’s definitely kind of nerve-wracking to get in front of people and to do that for the first time. I remember the first time I did it, I got off and I was like, “That was horrifying…I can’t wait to do it again.” (Singing) (Applause) (Music) The Allen Teen Arts Council is open to any teens interested in joining. Search Allen Teen Arts Council on Facebook to find an upcoming event, or contact them through Twitter.
