Talking about painting #5 – trying new stuff – dot art

some times you’ll just hit a creative…snag. Can we call it that? yeah. A creative snag. You feel like all your creativity just…. It’s left through your…ears. When this happens to me…wich it does atleast once a year I’ll feel like…blah! And I’ll just sit there kind of apathic And I’ll just do nothing. Wich is really not construcitve at all. The thing is: If you don’t use your creativity, it’ll dissappear. or…dissappears…it won’t dissappear per se ’cause if you’re creative, you are creative. but it can allso be trained. And in the same way, creativity can just.. You know,…when it’s been a while since you did something? You’ll get sort of rusty? Creativity is just like that. Like any other skill, really. You have to grease the wheels, so to speak. It’s like that with languages as well…you know, if you learn a secound language and you don’t get to practise, speaking this other language gets really difficult. It’s like that for me with Norwegian sign language. I learned sign language once. I don’t remember many signs anymore… So anyways. I try to look at the creative snags as an opportunity to try something new. Try a new tecnique or do something completely different for a while. sew or… I’ve been sewing by hand a lot lately, my fingers have gotten calluses from it. I reesently discovered “dot art” I follow two artists on instagram What I find intriguing about this is that you can both make hippy-ish sircular mandalas or you could do more whimsical aerias of smaller and bigger dots. And as you know: I do love sircles. All of my friends and everyone who’ve seen more than one of my paintings know this. So I thought I just had to try this. I can see, very clearly that my dots aren’t as…pretty As those on instagram. But I decided to try my had at it anyway. So the first thing I did was to paint this smallish canvass that I’ve had forever FOREVER! I painted it totally black. I just thought that….well first of all there was something on it allready… something green that dripped from annother painting, I think. But I’ve allso noted that these other people often use black as their background. some people paint on rocks as well, so that’d be grey, but anyway. And while that was drying, I tried the tecnique a little And I thought I’d do it some more. I don’t know what to say about it…other than I think it looks fun. I don’t think I’ll make money off of this tecnique yet. for a whi We’ll see how this turnes out after this practise run. I hope it turnes out…fun. I’m doing more than one thing at a time, right now. The radio’s charity fundraiser is on. And its soon time for Niklas and Ulrikke to rappell down a 20 storie building And I just have to see this. So I’ll keep one eye at you and one eye at that… This could get really fun. but anyway. I won’t tell you that this was a fast way of painting. Because it wasn’t. Full disclosure: This is going to be a talking about paint. Not even about painting. Just…paint. I mostly use this kind. It’s bought at Clas Ohlson. It’s…fine. It’s just fine acryllic paint. consistensy is just fine, for normal arting It’s durable, dries fast, good opacity and it’s just all round a great type of paint. It’s not the most expencive. It’s about 50NOK a tube at Clas Ohlson. You get what you pay for, really. It’s way easyer to go down to the mall and buy this. Than it is to drive to Oslo and the fancy artist’s paint place To buy expencive paint. Nice, expencive paint. Even tho nice expencive paints are really nice. But anyways. In the beginning I used this and some water to thin the paint a little to get more flow. You want flow to get round dots. Trouble is when you use too much water, cause that causes the paint to start acting like waterpaint. That’s when the dot’s starts bleeding. I’m not sure if you can see it… The paint has flowed a little. You can see that. Yep. Good. It’s not what I was going for. After a while I started to see how much…or how little water you can use. Too little water and the paint won’t flow off the brush as easily. Wich makes it harder to get round dots The other problem with water in the paint is that the opacity goes down. So on this black bacground it won’t stand out as much. So I was wondering what to do about it. what to do, what to do…? Let me tell you. Dig through your stash of expencive paint. This one is more expencive. I bought it at Østerlies in Trondheim They have it at KEM in Oslo as well. I love KEM. KEM: The artists’ own material store. It’s in Oslo, right next to Blå by Akerselva. You’re welcome. Or…sorry, not sorry. However you want to look at it. This is liquid paint. Wich makes the pigment really heavy. I usually spray water at it so it’ll start running down my bigger canvases. That’s when I got this. And I noticed right away that…. It showes how much higher quality this paint has. But allso: you need paint that are liquid allready to get the wanted result while doing this. so yeah. I started at this yellow patch over here… And then over here, I switched to the liquid paint. I tried to double back using the liquid paint and make these yellow colors a little more prominent. it worked. Ish. but…righnow… I really want to paint over parts of this in black and double back once more. Anyway. apart from my geeking off over paint. I’m gonna try and hold this so that you can’t see the “bad” part. This was really fun to do. Oh! Annother thing that I did that made it way easyer is that I went out and bought new brushes… I was using these. They are kind of tired…poor things. I’ve had this one for over ten years now. Come to think of it, that’s true for this one as well. This is the one of the two that have survived the most. Interesting…I think this one was cheaper… well…old brushes look way cooler. But they aren’t as good anymore. Got some new ones, wich made the dotting easyer. Easyer to do nice looking dots. I was able to get the paint flowing from the brush the way that I wanted. It was interesting. I’d say that this experiment was a succsess. It made me stay creative at a time when I’d probably just be sitting in front of the TV. And I’ll give thanks for that. Any day. I probably won’t use this tecnique very often. But it would make certan aerias look more interesting. It’s allways nice to try new things. I’ll urge you to try something new! If that’s dotted art or something else, I’ll leave to you.
