SoMeOnE sToLe My ArT sTyLe AnD nOw My LiFe Is OvEr

Hello, peasants. My name is Shannon, and I have literally never been inspired by anything outside of myself for I am a true original. When I create, I create new colors to use. Colors that before I thought of them, didn’t even exist We shall call this one Ebony Dementia Darkness Raven Way, and this one pepto-bismol. When I think of a concept for a piece, it’s like a dove flying down from the heavens to bestow a gift from the gods into my beautiful over 10000 IQ brain, to then give to the inferior earthlings around me. And of course, I complete it with the accuracy and precision of a sniper. Though people often ask what, or rather who my Inspirations are I can honestly only say me, for I am truly one-of-a-kind. A woman who draws other women? It’s almost inconceivable that I, a true original, whose only creative source is my own mind to exist in a modern day and age where we see a constant stream of images at all times. But alas, here I am. Worship me as your God, you chowderheads. *intense throat clearing* So that was a joke Obviously that was a fucking joke the worst part of help being on the Internet now is that I have to explain jokes to people over and over and over again, so no, this person who made the “I despise Creepshow arts” video isn’t actually saying they’re despise me. It’s a joke. Calm down Nobody thinks I’m a god *clap* However, we do live in an upside-down topsy-turvy world where people actually do kind of think like that Like I want to desperately show you a list of examples of people saying shit like that. Saying that this is their only true form of expression and they’re true originals and they’ve never taken from anyone and they’re not inspired by anything but you know what, I am NOT going to do that Call me a punk ass bitch, but I mean that’s kind of mean not gonna expose your faves But seriously, they talk to all that nonsense. So go ask them. You’re all fuckin welcome *sigh* calming down now Honestly, I really don’t know how Batman like keeps his cool all the time I could never but I guess, you know, trauma. Ever since I hit a certain threshold of Subscribers or people who follow my shit and got a certain amount of quote-unquote success I have had people asking me pretty much every day how I found my art style, which is this. This is my art style. Call it good. Call it bad. Call it Nancy, doesn’t matter. This is what people know me for and because people know me for this and only this they assumed I have cracked a certain code in my life about how to find an artistic crystal stone like Indiana Jones. I’ve never seen Indiana Jones So, if that’s not a good metaphor, then let’s try a meta-five I have people asking me how they can find an original art style and all of that jazz all the time and the emphasis is On the word original and every time I have been asked this question, I have given the same lackadaisical response non-stop I literally don’t know having an art style does not matter just draw leave me alone in my squalor to die. Just, but honestly just fucking draw and for dogs sakes stop putting so much pressure on yourself because you’re not going to find it that way and you’re not gonna have fun that way. It’s that simple. Or in my head it’s that simple, but I’m not an art teacher and I have very little education so feel free to call me wrong and let me know in the comments down below. Or feel free to tell me I talk too much about myself on my own damn channel because apparently that’s a thing now SORRY. Back on topic back on topic just make stuff and keep making it and get better through making things. Challenge yourself. And it sounds like I’m giving you just the bare bones basic advice of every youtuber who’s ever existed, but guess what? It’s true So don’t turn me into a roast goose. It’s literally true Don’t limit yourself to only looking at your own art and don’t be afraid to try new things and to learn from those things When I quote “found my style” unquote, I was just doing things I like doing and taking things I had seen other artists do before me and there is literally nothing wrong with that at all. There is this idea or kind of want to be completely and utterly original and do things in a way that can only be attributed to you But guess what fam? That’s a completely unreal expectation to set before yourself and every other artist in the world You have seen far too much and been influenced by too many things to be a true original, both in your personality and in your art Despite what you may have heard, you’re not a special snowflake. And to show you how unsocial and to show you just how unspecial our little flakes are, I am going to list oh, just most of my artistic influences that I have referenced in how I make art. I have learned from these people, I’ve developed things for- I’ve developed methods that I’ve seen them do and kind of shit out my own things, but these are people who I actually looked at and said “I want to do that, I’m going to draw like them.” First off, I took the eye thing- the eye little swoosh thing I do from Archie comics and Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. I went through an insane Archie comics phase in high school, and my unrealistic proportions in the bodies I kind of draw are mostly influenced by that as well. The way Betty, Veronica, Cheryl, pretty much every attractive female that they drew, looked in those comics made me want to draw females like that. Also, Jessica Rabbit because of course. I took the long neck style, uh, how I elongate the neck in an unrealistic expectation kind of way, from Raja Gemini and particularly her Raja Drawja series, which is what inspired this entire channel. Despite what other youtubers like to say and imply and send me direct messages about. (You fucking know who you are) I took the nose from fukar- I took the nose that I tend to draw from fu-kar-art. Fukari art, excuse me, who is just by far one of my favorite artists alive like the stuff that she does is so fucking good Also, I mix that kind of Archie/ Cal art style in terms of nose I’ve heard people say it’s very pimply. I took it from the Dan parent era of Archie comics So if you look at that, it kind of makes more sense. Most of my noses are distinctly shapes, which is a sentence I just said. And also when I did patterns in hair, I was directly emulating Gustav Klimt my all-time favorite artist who’s ever lived I even have a tattoo of his signature on my ankle Other artists that I have been inspired by who you wouldn’t be able to tell that I was inspired by is Kiki Come on DeviantArt, Petite Doll, whoever did the Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Any of the superhero shows, Hollywood from Cool World, Glenn King for fucking sure and there’s probably a lot more artists But those are the ones I can remember I’m currently blocked like drawing a blank like, you know When people ask you your favorite song and you’re like, I’ve never heard music a day in my life That’s what’s happening All of that is to say, despite people thinking otherwise, are credited (stumbling again oop) crediting me with originality. There is nothing new or cool or interesting about me I am a sham. A sham who copied other people who made something that looks like none of their art a copy who created something new which is the brilliant part of it. If you take your influences and blend them together with everything else you like you will inevitably get something you like that looks nothing like with the person who influenced it, You know? What I am doing and what I am attempting to do isn’t and wasn’t new, groundbreaking or my own. It’s just a collage of things that I have been influenced by. Influenced by suddenly finding life in my own little mittens and then on the page I didn’t set out to find it, it just kind of happened. The reality, is if you make shit that you like and you think it’s aesthetically pleasing in its own way you will start creating in a certain way and you will have creative, like, markers that people relay back to you even if other people don’t like it as long as you like it and like what you’re doing, That is all that matters. Truly. Through creating what I wanted, even if it’s shitty Tumblr art, it has brought me joy and pleasure and I found my style. While I was considering making this video I tweeted something about just being annoyed at seeing people accuse others of stealing their art style And then I had a small interaction on Twitter (go follow me on there as sm_creepshow, What up?) And the person I was talking to had a very strange response to me after I said “No artist is fully original and no one should cite themselves as being the full source of inspiration for someone else.” Which is something that I think is unfortunate and it happens all the fucking time, and every time it happens, I feel like it’s incredibly egotistical. Uh, the person said, “If you really want to look at it like that, nothing anyone makes is original then and because of that, no one can really be proud of their work being original, with that logic,” and that stuck out to me if your goal is to do something original and different in terms of art EVERY SINGLE TIME, I am sorry, but you are just going to disappoint yourself. We live in a day and age where you are constantly seeing advertisements, nature, art, people. We live in a SOCIETY. Back on topic- you are too influenced by your surroundings to be a true original in the way you are seeking. So inevitably, the quest is going to fail and you’re just- and you have just added another layer of stress to creating artistically which does not need to be there. At fucking all. There is nothing wrong or phony or fraudulent with learning from other people or being influenced by other people, because you are a human person who has the ability to observe human life around you. You are everyone you surround yourself with. You are influenced by your mom, your dad, your sister, your brother, your friends, freaking everyone you’ve had to deal with your entire existence. Even that fucker who pulled- poured milk on you the same thing happens with your art, mate. It is nothing to be ashamed of and while there are cases of someone blatantly copying over art and adding nothing new about it, that is not what we’re fucking talking about. Like there’s that one guy who blatantly copies The Odd One Out and like, does that shit, and the difference there is that it’s not copying an art style That is literally up just like, tracing over someone’s work and like, recoloring it and saying “This is mine.” Which is completely different. That has nothing to do with style. That’s just like, I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s not what we’re talking about. We are talking about someone drawing something in a similar fashion to another artist, someone using their two hands to create something entirely their own concept but its style looking similar to someone else’s. I hope that made sense because the whole, like- I don’t know. I should give up on everything. It’s also really important to emphasize that other people can draw like you without them knowing about you. One million percent. Despite people like *dolphin noise* or *double dolphin noise* thinking that their style is iconic and can only be credited back to them and anyone who does something similar is clearly copying them, parallel thinking is fucking real and you can end up with the same style as someone without even knowing each other. You were influenced by a good many people to end up at the destination you’re at. What makes you think you were the only one with that same roadmap? Do you really think no one else would be influenced by those same people? I had someone message me that this other Instagram artist was creating shit that looks similar to mine, and they asked me if I believed that this young woman who was creating this was blatantly ripping me off, but this artist was this wonderful brilliant young woman living in Mexico who had never fucking heard of me because of course she hadn’t and This has happened again and again and again with like a Swedish artist and then another American artist and then it’s at the point where if someone else does eyes in a similar style to what I do, there are people who will message me and say, “They’re copying you, they’re ripping you off.” But that is never the case and even if it was the case even if they saw my video and was like I’m going to draw like that, like, as long as they aren’t literally putting my name on their account and saying it’s theirs and they are signing their name to their work, We’re gravy. It’s not a huge deal. So let’s maybe, like, tone it back just a little bit. Just a tiny bit. Mm-hmm So note to all artists, you’re not original. Neither. Is your art Someone can do similar shit to you without knowing you, it’s not the end of the world. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be proud of what you create or proud of what you do. Art style doesn’t matter, art matters, no matter what style it’s in. Going out of your way to look for your own artistic signature that isn’t inspired by anything outside of yourself is like sitting in a windowless room with nothing to do but think about your life’s purpose or lack of it. You are not going to find it there by stressing about it, and style is something that you shouldn’t limit yourself with. Never be afraid to step outside your bounds or experiment or learn about different kind of art that you wouldn’t necessarily do. So my advice to you guys, which I’m giving you as a complete and utter toad who knows nothing, is to go outside. Experience art. Draw influence from what you see, create what you want to create, make shit because you think it looks good, and don’t worry about the style or making your own or being original. Just keep moving forward, my dude. I know you’ll be fine. I sound like a huge pussy. Wow. *sigh* Well, fuck this. I’m a fucking Chad. I don’t know anything. Do what you want. Have a great day. I hope you all don’t die. Bye.

  1. chad artist: no original content because they only know how to steal art styles, is racist for drawing poc, only talks about themselves on their channel like a stuck up fucking bitch, 71k subscribers because they appeal to the sheeple mass

virgin artist: completely original content, in fact they can be called THE original artist, picasso is jobless, never racist because they only draw their own ethnicity, doesn't talk about themselves at all, wow how mysterious, 100 subscribers because their unbridled genius isn't appreciated and the world just isnt ready for them yet :((

  2. ive not looked them up in a long time, but fukari used to be one of, if not my absolute favorite artists years ago, when i was having my Deviantart phase. my high point?! 5. honestly this is the best advice and assurance ever made, i really needed to hear this. 10. This vid made me feel so much better about my art style. Also I like the rib cage bones you drew on the chest, it’s a realistic and nice touch

  11. Omfg thank you
I wanted to "find" my art style for a LONG time.
And i became so frustrated with myself because i wasnt being original, or i felt terrible about my art. And this made me really f-ing happy. Idk why, but it did.

  12. I love how you can think of the lip as anything in this drawing it can be a surprised mouth, a mustache or just her lips.

  13. I hated my handwriting in elementary/middle school and was really jealous of people with neat handwritings. So, I "ripped off" the things I liked in the handwritings of students who were sitting next to me. I did this for years until I didn't hate the way I write my letters or words anymore. I am a handwriting thief.

  14. I actually got inspiration on how to draw eyelashes from you! I've always struggled with eyelashes, and they way you did them was pretty, so I tried to do something similar in my art, and I think it has been working thus far! I agree with this video, we are all influenced by something, and as long as we don't trace, etc, then it's fine. Actually, I think being inspired and trying out something another artist does can help you inprove a lot.

  15. I actually really needed this. People around me have been calling me an unoriginal twat cuz I use references. Thanks for this

  16. I believe everyone's style is unique, however, there will be art styles similar in some way, but not literally the fucking same.

  17. this isn't the way everyone should do it. Some shouldn't draw inspiration from others because then it sounds unlike themselves and others should take more inspiration from others because then you just sound like shit. (im saying sounds because im equating this to music it's an art form)

  18. I wouldn't even know who or what inspired my art…I mean it's pretty clear that it's inspired by anime, becouse that was what I was aiming for. But I could never pick a single influence xD
I know that a lot of my single art works are inspired by clear things. For example I drew a wolf like animal with chalk inspired by the manga "the book of list", but I doubt that anyone would notice that xD
The only thing I can put a single influence source in the spot light is my way of writing characters. Becouse it's pretty clear that it is greatly inspired by the way the characters in "Pandora Hearts" are writen xD
So I'm really suprised that you could name so many influences for your style! I'm impressed!

  19. I'm sorry I'm a fucking stalker or somthing. But I'm glad natalie likes her tattoo lmao.
Btw I saw the text message on the speed paint and I'm not actually a stalker lmaoooo

  20. I have to say I partially disagree with you
Yes, true originality is bullsh and I wholeheartedly agree with your points regarding taking inspiration and elements from other artists.
However the best way of finding an "original style" is still learing how to draw from life. Look at it like that: remember old disney's sleeping beauty? They drew the characters from life and stylized them. If now someone watches this movie and likes how the eyes looked they copy the style – then someone likes their art and copies then. It's still an eye, but it went through three iterations by that time from styalized reality to a copy of the styalization to a copy of the copy.
I don't know if I made sense (english isn't even my fucking second language) so yes, true originality doesn't exist, but there also is a way of finding your own style
Thank you for comming to my TEDtalk

  21. bruh its true. you cant find your own style without drawing or being inspired to draw. i found my style by accident. i have an overwhelming amount of reference pictures. Im A fraud!!!😩

  22. This video is so important, especially for younger self-taught artists. I could've really used this kind of advice a few years back but this video is still a really nice reminder, thank you <3

  23. THANK YOU, I have been saying this shit for years! like damn, chill child, you human like the rest of us and sometimes people do the same damn thing.
Not to burst some bubbles, but you aint that special, stop trying to be 'one of a kind' you're you, a human like the rest of us, deal with it and have fun.

  24. ohmygod the intro I didn't want to smile but I snorted my Dr Pepper and it burns. I literally just draw trees and floating vines that probably don't exist IRL but it's fine.

  25. I totally agree with almost all of this accept one thing. β€œYou are not original and neither is your art.” I agree that an art style or a color combination or pose or anything like that can not be stolen, but that doesn’t mean artists aren’t original in their own way. No two art pieces are exactly alike. No two characters are exactly alike. No two stories or animations or even styles are VERBATUM exactly alike unless someone went out, and full on copied it. Maybe I’m nieve, maybe I’m hopeful, but I like to think of myself, and every other imaginative creator as original in one shape or form because it’s pretty depressing and even unmotivating to peruse art with the mindset that nothing you create brings something to the table and has all been seen before. Maybe that’s just me.

  26. I draw mostly tattoos, and the flower tats u gave to ur character are like my EXACT style 😭😭😭😭 (there is no possible way ur copying me lmao) but it was so dope to see like something I’d do on YOUR art ❀️❀️ ily the most and I’ve been binge watching your videosπŸ€ͺπŸ€ͺ

  27. Don't tell people that the reason they don't have an original style is because they're not a "special snowflake". It's completely possible to create a totally original style. Every "aesthetic" was completely new at one point. It's not an unrealistic expectation, and there's nothing wrong with wanting that.
The thing is that takes a LOT of intentional work to do that, and nobody talks about that. You have to study the fundamental art principles and play around with them a lot. You have to study original shapes from nature, and exaggerate them in an original way. You have to take what you like from other artists and reincorporate them in an original way. Every artist has been influenced by someone else, but original artists put in a lot of work to have what they have.

Kidding. Also the beginning was funny lmfao. I laughed.

  29. Omigod the beginning had me in tears__I've never heard you speak like this while bullshitting it was so funny

  30. hearing Ebony Dementia Darkness Raven Way for the first time in like 500 years just punched me in the gut with horrible nostalgia

  31. Your response, while appropriate, is lack*A*daisical, not lack*si*daisical. Soooo many people pronounce this wrong. Love your channel btw, just hate this mispronunciation, it's like someone chewing with their mouth open for me.

  32. I know this was made a long time ago but you are genuinely funny and your art is amazing. You have great content and you seem like an amazing person and you've inspired me a lot and watching your videos brings me out of the hell I live in.

  33. β€˜ We shall call this one Ebony Dementia Darkness Ravenway ’

I don't think I've ever burst out laughing that hard or quick before. I had to pause and write this cos I'm a fucking dork and have been dying over this for the last three minutes.

Edit: Okay an actual comment now xD
I remember thinking I would never be able to create good, anatomically correct art and I would never draw proper human skulls and I legitimately believed this and was ok with it.
Today, I drew something that I think is brilliant and the anatomy is great and the head is proportional! And it looks a lot like DrawingWiffWaffles' style! I'm heavily inspired by her but I'm still not unoriginal. (Not related at all I just wanted to point out that you can be original while picking concepts, too.)
I just kept drawing. I learned and took in information from speedpaints on how to build structure in bodies, I watched videos about muscles, and I am still learning. I did all this in ~6 years with not even that much drawing. I take month long breaks. It is not that hard to learn and develop if you're willing to.

  35. There's no such thing as an original art style. Whatever you do in your art, no matter how unique you think it is, someone else does it as well. There are so many artists in the world, it still astounds me that some think they are the only person on Earth with a personalized, completely isolated art style when in reality, no art style is truly one of a kind. But that doesn't really matter. As long as you draw what makes you happy, and you think what you're drawing is cute, go for it. It doesn't matter where you get your inspiration from
