Sample Literary Analysis Research

hi everyone this is mr. Mitas and I wanted to take a moment to go over the sample literary analysis research paper with you so you haven't already done so make sure that you read through the sample prior to watching this video and if you'd like you can pause the video now so that you can get a chance to do that otherwise we will get started so as always let's get started with the formatting formatting remains the same where you have of course the header with the last name and page number remember to insert the page number using the function in your word processor you also then of course have the heading make sure that you have the day full type out the full month and the year find out your section number so you can include that with the course number my name si 3 and then of course an original title now the introduction again moves just like all the others from general all the way to specific with the transition in between for this particular essay because it is a research essay the content and the focus of your introduction is going to depend largely upon what you want to achieve and what you want to argue this particular example contains general ideas here and then it moves to a short summary of the novel of the writers writing about so then we've we have the transition and then we have research here when the research is introduced you have the name of the authors and you have the title of the article here along with a paraphrase or summary of the arguments that this writer wants to focus on and then we have at the end your thesis statement here the thesis statement has to be argumentative and it is what you believe is the author's commentary on the subject explored in this in the text in this case the things they carried by by tomorrow is a novel that focuses on a soldier's a group of soldiers experienced in the Vietnam War so the thesis contains the title of the text it contains and the author notice how the author here is only the last name the reason why is because we have the full name appear so once you've identified the full name so the first time is the full name after that you can use the last name only the only thing that you cannot use is the first name only so you can use either the full name or the last name only so the spiders arguing that O'Brien infers a relative belief that love is present and all things including something as traumatic as war and can provide an insured amount of solid stability alright so this particular thesis doesn't focus on a specific characters it's unfocused necessarily on an element it focuses so unless you consider love as a symbolic as a symbol but it's looking at how love as a concept functions within the entirety of the novel now the topic sentences just like you would see in the other thematic analysis paper makes an argument about what is happening in this story so it doesn't simply identify the action or the or or the plot of the story but it is making an argument about a specific character and it is providing an interpretation right the idea that the pantyhose the sentimental item that Henry Dobbins carries meant at least for Henry Dobbins the difference between life and death right so it's a very clear argument then what we have is a set up of quote one here and what you get is a paraphrase of essential information and this info then helps us to understand the quote the quote itself then notice I want you to notice the quote itself is actually cut so if we were to look at O'Brien page 118 we would see that mmm this quote right here more than anything though the stockings were a talisman for him it's probably a complete sentence and then this one they kept him safe is probably another complete sentence what this writer did was use the brackets to change the Em's and the t's to lower case and then used and as a way to connect both dots and because they exist on the same page then all you need is one parenthetical citation this sentence immediately following the quote has two reference or reflect on the quote in this particular case this reflection is used as a way to prepare us for our transition into a citation from a secondary source and here we have then the title of the source as well as the authors of the source and then we have a direct quote and when we look at what follows this is that this first sentence reflects on the quote and then this next sentence ties it ties the research to the story and so that's one thing that you really want to keep in mind is that every time you're using research within body paragraphs that research is there to help you develop a particular interpretation of what's happening in the story as such then you don't want to go into a discussion for example here on on ornaments or talismans or you know whatever that this quote is discussing you don't want to just talk about this in general you want to use that as a way to tie it back to what is happening to the characters because that's the purpose of your research after that we have a continued discussion of the story along with then the second quote of the story and then a short brief and interpretation of that at the end of the paragraph if you look at the following body paragraphs almost all of them have a similar follow a similar format the second body paragraph only contains texture examples from the story but the next one contains again the texture example from the story along with the use of secondary source and as you can see here we have just we have two texture examples and then we have the the research coming in after that so the research can come in before your first texture example it can come in in between your texture examples or it can come in after your text two examples but because this is the research paper you want to make sure that you're using texture examples all the way I'm sorry that you're using research all the way throughout the entire essay I should be able to see research utilized and almost every single body paragraph of the essay the conclusion again is your own you begin by restating the thesis and then in this case what we have is final thoughts on the subject so again avoid summarizing the what you've already discussed in your essay avoid semis in it and the conclusion offer final thoughts talk about why you chose the story if there's a personal connection there then discuss that and again this is the only place in which I is okay in conclusion Ally I remember avoid the use of the word you talk about all the quotes you use don't paraphrase them interpret interpret them the annotated bibliography should prepare you well for this particular essay because in if you did the annotated bibliography well you should have already thought through how you were going to use each of your secondary sources so that means that if in the annotated bibliography you talked about how you are going to use a specific source to analyze a specific moment in a story or to analyze a specific character then go back to that annotated bibliography so that you can make sure that those those articles are being coupled with the moments in the story that you thought was useful in the annotated bibliography right so that should help you a little bit in thinking through how this essay builds the last page of course is always the work cited page again it is the last page on your document it does have a title that's in the center make sure that your sources are alphabetized only the first line reaches that left margin everything else is a hanging indent so I hope that this helps you if you have any questions email me and I will be more than happy to try and assist you with that not happy writing and good luck
