Poetry Off The Shelf: Lit & Luz

good evening everyone welcome to the opening day of lit and lose we are so pleased you were here my name is Joel Craig I'm the poetry editor for make literary magazine I'd like to thank you again for coming out tonight and thanks especially to the Poetry Foundation for helping us host such a wonderful event I have been stressing about this introduction all week I must confess though I have introduced hundreds of poets in my life I have never until now written a formal introduction or given a formal introduction I don't know how to write or give a formal introduction or a practical introduction that will serve as a guide to your expectations I'm paranoid because of all the negative things I've heard over the years about formal introductions formal introductions go on too long have more to do with the ego or narcissism or worldview of the introducer rather than the talent and accomplishments of the introduced or worse it's a therapeutic process propaganda Dale Breckenridge Carnegie huckster self-improvement guru once said the sweetest sound in the world is one's own name Daniel Bors it's key when I hear your name it all just sounds like Daniel brewski who said I don't much understand the so-called value of using language economically one needs to make a mess to write about the darkness that surrounds us and darkness does surround us Daniel makes persistent profligate concurrent agitations but I wouldn't call them messes in Daniels poems there aren't enough synonyms for our statement acity cultural debris harassed labor or tortured bodies nor enough syntax for comfort amid all the absurd misfortune so I will leave it to single words intuitive audacious humble funny satiric patient and flagrant jargon loving words smashed out of the sky daniel berserk ski is the author of four books including the book of interfering bodies and the forthcoming in the murmurs of the rotten carcass economy both from night book books his poetry translations include Raul's Rita's song for his disappeared love and Jaime Louisianans port chocol both from action books daniel is also the spanish language poetry editor for make very glad to call him a friend so please give a warm welcome Thank You Joel I was really very very warm nice introduction thank you all for coming and thank you to Sarah Dodson for organizing this incredible festival and for the various events that are happening this week I'm going to read three pieces the last one will include video and I will explain a bit when I get there let light shine out of darkness I live in a body that does not have enough light in it for years I did not know that I needed to have more light once I walked around my city on a dying morning and the decomposed decomposing body approached me and asked me why I had no light I knew this decomposing body all that remained of it were teeth bits of bone a hand it came to me and said there is no light I did not know at the time that there should have been light in my body it's not that I am dead it's not that I am translucent it's that you cannot know you need something if you do not know what is missing which is not to say that for years I did not ask for this light once I even said to the body I live with I think I need more light in my body but I really did not take this seriously as a need something I deserved to have I said I think I need for something blue or green to shine from my rib cage other times when I am talking about lightness I'm talking about breath and space and movement for it is hard to move in a body so congested with images of mutilation did you hear the one about the illegal immigrant you electrocuted his employees genitals did you hear the one about the boy in Chicago whose ear was bitten off when he crossed a border he did not know existed I want to give you more room to move so I'm trying to carve a space with light for you to walk a bit more freely this goes against my instincts which are to tie you down to tie you to me to bind us by the wrist the belly the neck and to look directly into your mouth to make you open your mouth and speak the vocabulary of Opel iteration right into your tongue your veins blood I stopped on a bridge over the train tracks and consider the history of the chemical melting of my skin once when I poured a certain type of acid on my arm I swore I saw a bright yellow gas seeping out of my body once my teeth closed sick from the disease snow they had shoved into my mouth when they wanted me to taste for myself to bring into my body the sorrows of the rotten carcass economy once I dream road that I found my own remains in a desert that was partially in cheela and partially in Arizona was I disappeared body tossed out of an airplane by a bureaucrat soldier compatriot was I migrant body who died from dehydration or crossing the invisible line between one civilization and another I was part of a team of explorers we were searching for our own bodies in the desert I found my feet and I put them in a plastic bag and photographed them catalog them weighed and measured them and when I was finished with the bureaucratize ation of my remains I laid down in the sand and asked one of my colleagues to jam a knife into my belly she obliged when the blade entered my skin It was as if my belly or a water balloon the water shot into the air my skin ripped into hundreds of pieces and I watched as the water covered the feet of my colleagues who were here to document their disappearances and decomposition it was at this moment that I saw light in my body not son and but a drip of soft blue on a piece of skin that had fallen off my body and dissolved into its own dream song number 423 then I stepped out of the sea and into a bonfire on the beach and the beach became a prairie and the Prairie began to reproduce itself for miles and miles we loft we walked along the fence until we reached an abandoned factory where the workers had all died from dehydration when the manager told them they could no longer afford to have water too much time tomando el combate equal not enough time making t-shirts not enough time making t-shirts covered on seto equals not enough money to pay you mikito not enough money to pay you equal the sidewalk the park bench the Coyotes banging your head against the side of the truck don't eat my intestines have a seat though don't need my feet pather own seat though don't need all hoes got a pillow none of that they don't let you torture at the United Nations these were the final words of the borderless body as it crumbled into the sand I don't remember how the song ends I think there was a landscape and we put a curtain over and the children came out running when we pulled up the curtain and they jumped into mountain number 423 and they looked for their mothers and fathers but all they found were sheep and goats and Leopards lepers and the last verse we sang a song about the Statue of Liberty the fastest woman in all of Mexico I loved her seeing the generals and the CEOs I loved her seeing the Bolivians in the peruvians I love her seeing the beggars in the bankers I loved her rusted body seeing the pornographers and the doctors I loved her reverie her darkness her malleability seeing the professors I loved her scenes the poet because she reminds me of my mother my mother reminds me of my self and I rhyme remind myself with my father and all the mouths he needs to feed I hate living I do nothing I love deserts and cacti and the infinite tunnels where my dreams on turns into a blood song splattered from a mouth into a puddle of exploding ventricles busting hypnotized hana-chan some publisher of action books introduced her first of all it's really cool an American culture we've had some ambivalent relationship to translation for a long time after all the most famous as I like to point out the most famous definition of poetry in American poetry is that portrays what's lost in translation Robert Frost said and even translate seems very much concerned with the impossibility of translation which is often meant as as a criticism even though impossibility is generally about poetry it's the domain of poetry and art a lot of skepticism I think about translation comes from I'm realizing I'm sure this is one of those introductions that we were warned about so I'll skip for that and through this but one hand anxieties come from a you lose this self-contained object that a needed for a new critical reading or for new historicist you lose a kind of stable idea of context this always found I always found these to be very little to do with art because art seems much more dynamic than that to me I never thought the poem as exemplifying some kind of stable cultural trait but rather to be something that opened up a zone where contexts and translations and originals could all interact in different ways and of course those interactions are not always as Daniels video showed are not always pleasant or smooth sailing up and they're violent often they may be infection or crashing through each other also poems are not always put they're not standing always in the center of cultures put often moving on that a referee's of culture or exiled from their cultures or traversing boundaries when they write and Valerie Myers work to me it's a super interesting partly because of the way it seems to deal with what is foreign and what is Heimlich and an Heimlich homely and secret and new discoveries as well as nostalgic indifference to this kind of trend in academia global literature I like to think of Valerie's hallucinatory fish stunning visual writing it's creating something like global uncanny where there's the way this is kind of violence that comes out of crossing national boundaries actually come out so that when in her poem from the way of the way begins quote in green water I saw your eye and in it I saw that Arabian Palace filled with birds and broken glass or in her poem uncanny number five the animal the old dead animal fed on newspapers how could I have known it was me prehistoric as I was and blue-eyed because all says like that well I think translation does is often open ups and I chronicity energies not just between boundaries but between periods of time the Gretsch eleum patrols to read the rights about Valerie Jeremiah keeps writing poems that in their disconsolate perplexity disclose a sweeping prospect in which biography landscape memory and dream erase their respective margin making clear to us that we come to while we come to call existence is simply a modality in which we claim our right to weakness defeat hemorrhage because only through radical vulnerability and the urgency of love arise and just as Sarita sees radical vulnerability in the cross contamination between dream and poem and memory we can also see that in the contamination between languages for example how in dollars come on Connie number to last you a yahoo s de la noche becomes nights mare as if there's a nightmare hidden in the translation a secret that could only be uncovered through translation thank you Paul thank you for the porterhouse thank you Michael for having us here having thank you so much so this is going to be the Opera Bremen with me reading in English so be kind of a whistle if you think it's terrible and then I call it very generous but Sookie offered to substitute me but be fair so be honest okay and I'm gonna read first the English because I think then the Spanish gonna be easier for youth again then if I read the Spanish first from the wave the way in green water I saw your eye and you need my so that Iranian Palace feel with birds and broken glass I copy another's into my right hand and feel myself with memories of sounds a green fish emerges from seaweed a seaweed from a wave that rises like the whirling world my sunbake body and the age wind in my lungs is whistle my torn world my grief my soggy passport my shell with no pearl you live them delicate cloud into a liquid world last night I dream of my father's flabby body enough my blue resolved to run away to find a way I dreamed of your eye and for an instant I found the burdens of the road the imaginary line that falls across the earth that meridian were the sun on a diverse bag meets the shade and expelling waking on were swallowed by wakefulness they howl swallows us in its terrible thirst the routine of taking our children to school swallows us and so does they there was something to the dream you know it an Hyman and even when I'm from a German background the explanation and I'm sure is not Johannes would know better they point an Italian port that made a beautiful movie about nostalgia and melancholy with Tony know whether that one that made all the scripts of that era and all those things from Fellini explained to me that on he mates with his inside of the house and out and not familiar the familiar against the unfamiliar but he gave me this incredible example that I have to share with you that Freud started using the world since he had a dream where all his family was together and there was Martha and everybody the usual thing they were eating the same thing everything with a tiny exception that they were all speaking in Japanese and for the for the Spanish audience this is going to be very familiar because it addresses a museum that is now near my home that is almost surely less mummies they were no quantum and Mexico is completely uncanny altogether you know on the Sun blazed used to being here between Melbourne ranges that clutch us in their fists there is no sight outside of the universe no sight where I can enter without feeling my whole life's hunger desperate she tore
