Painter and Actor Gabriel Palma Gains New Respect for ‘The Joy of Painting’ — The Bob Ross Challenge

– My name is Gabriel Palma, I normally act and I normally paint. Ten years serious painter,
childhood painter. Ever since I started
watching “Ninja Turtles,” then I started drawing them, and then it begun the art process. Ninja Turtle, I’ll air draw
it for you, ready guys? Here we go, boom. Boom, Raphael. I’ve never painted with Bob Ross, and I know I’m missing out,
which is why I’m here today, to paint with Bob Ross. I feel like I’m gonna do
an amazing painting today, and I feel that I might
become an art star after this. Will I be a millionaire
directly after this episode? I don’t know. (cheery music) – Hello, I’m Bob Ross and
I’d like to welcome you — – Ooh, splattering. The blue’s mixing right into it, it’s already doing an
atmospheric thing, immediately. You’re a genius. Wait, oh, God you’re fast, Bob. I’m loving this, but it’s just so fast. This is gorgeous already! How’s my hair look, though? – Good to me. – Thank you.
– Yep. – Whoa! His technique is so damn good. It’s efficient, he knows exactly
what tool is used for what. There’s just no wasting time
with this guy, he’s a rockstar. There’s no dilly-dallying around here. I’m not afraid that it’s too
dark, I’m not afraid, Bob. I like that, what he just said. “You can’t get caught up
in worrying about whether or not you’re doing it right or wrong.” Painter, actor, whatever you’re doing, I mean if you think that, that
there is a right or a wrong, I mean, there’s no way
you’re ever gonna create art that’s free and uninhibited
and real and true. This is like, way harder than I expected. (laughing) I came in here way too confident, man. (laughing) I don’t know if I’m gonna be
a famous artist after this. I have a brand new appreciation for him, it’s pretty incredible actually. Like, I’m following along with him but at the same time I’m like, departing. I gotta take it down Gabe
Palma route right now. But his approach is so like, practical I feel like anybody can do it. – Yeah, this little rascal out here. – He called it a little rascal. (laughing)
I love this. – Happy painting and God bless, my friend. – Well I mean, that’s nice
that he’s done, but I’m– (laughing) (gentle guitar music) Come along viewers, I’m gonna
take you along my paintin’. In the short amount of time, all I wanted to do was create some sort
of three-dimensionality. So, here as you can see, is my attempt at a mountain in the foreground. Things in darker value come forward, things in lighter value recede. And how this comes a little
forward, is I use color. Those warmer colors bring
that object forward even more. And then, this is a streak
of white canvas I didn’t, I forgot to paint on, but
let’s just say metaphorically, it’s a ray of hope, for all of us. I think Bob probably
doesn’t want everybody to paint like him. He’s kinda just reaching
out the television, taking your hand, and guiding you. He wants everyone to discover
their own path with it. Bob Ross is a boss. (cheery music) (electronic chime)
