(DEANNA) WE’RE ALSO FOLLOWING OVERNIGHT NEWS FROM SURRY COUNTY. THAT’S WHERE THE DISCOVERY OF RACIST VANDALISM TARGETING THE SHERIFF– LEADS TO A POLICE PURSUIT AND ENDS IN AN ARREST. THIS MAN, JOHN EVERETT OF SPRING GROVE, IS BEHIND BARS THIS MORNING AFTER A POLICE CHASE LAST NIGHT. EVERETT IS ACCUSED OF SPRAY-PAINTING SHERIFF CARLOS TURNER’S RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN SIGNS WITH A KU-KLUX-KLAN HOOD OVER THE SHERIFF’S HEAD. DEPUTIES SAY SHERIFF TURNER IS THE ONE WHO DISCOVERED EVERETT BY A SIGN AT THE CORNER OF MARTIN LUTHER KING HIGHWAY AND COLONIAL TRAIL WEST JUST BEFORE 9 LAST NIGHT. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS TURNER NOTICED EVERETT HAD A SPRAY PAINT CAN AND A CUT OUT STENCIL MATCHING THE SYMBOL ON THE CAMPAIGN SIGN. DEPUTIES SAY BEFORE TURNER COULD APPROACH HIM, HE TOOK OFF, LEADING THEM ON A CHASE AT SPEEDS OVER 85 MILES PER HOUR. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS EVERETT EVENTUALLY CRASHED IN A SOYBEAN FIELD AND SHERIFF TURNER ARRESTED HIM.
