Industrial Design at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design

[MUSIC PLAYING] Industrial design is the
creation and improvement of any product or system. If an architect
designs a home, we design everything that
goes into that home. If an engineer constructs a
chair that is safe to sit on and supports our weight,
industrial designers make that chair comfortable. When you look at
any good product, it will look like
it's created by magic. And everything that goes into
that will seem so obvious, but nothing is easy or simple or
obvious in creating a product. In this place it truly
is student focused. The classroom is
really in the hallways. It's in the gallery spaces. It's in the 3D lab. And there's engagement
and teaching going on and it's exciting. It's passionate. And we really foster
that within our students. We have all the state of the
art software and hardware to create 3D prototyping,
but at the same time we have to learn to be able to
make and assess and evaluate an idea by hand. A lot of schools can't do that. The 3D lab is, for the sake
of conversation, an extremely large, hands-on woodshop. And I'd say it's
more of a workshop, [? multing ?] material,
multifaceted with machinery. The students have
100% access to it and that's where the
majority of the projects realize their vision. We bring the real world
into the classroom. It's about training students
to walk into an internship or into full-time employment
and hit the ground running. We make sure that the students
learn all aspects of the design process. They learn how to draw. They learn how to think. They learn how to make things. They learn how to use the latest
computer-aided design software. That's what's really exciting. There's such an explosion of the
need for industrial designers. We regularly place students
in the automotive industry. We have a great relationship
with General Motors. We do a lot of consumer
[? consultant ?] products, consumer electronics. We have students who are
translating complex ideas and concepts at marketing
firms and advertising firms. We can teach you how to think. We can teach you how to draw. We'll teach you how
to make rapid models and low-resolution models. And we'll teach you how
to think on your feet. And more importantly, you
will learn the confidence to do that in any
medium in any field. [MUSIC PLAYING]
