How to make a DIY Paint Booth

Hi, I am Bob and I like to make stuff Today we gonna make … a portable paint booth. [Music playing, tool sounds] I realize that I am often not telling you guys why I am building these things or the constraints that I have to work within So I am gonna do that now. You see me paint outside a lot and it’s not ideal Because it’s hot, there are often bugs and sometimes it’s even raining. But I need to be able to either paint in my shop or in a more controlled environment outside the shop. Lately I have been building this prop sort on my live stream on twitch and it’s ready to paint. So I am gonna build a paint booth that I can either use in the shop or outside but it has got two big constraints. One: I want it to be cheap. I have a lot of scrap material alright here that I can use and I plan doing so as much as possible. And number two: It has to be collapseable. I don’t have room to store a big box. So I need to be able to fold this thing up and stick it behind a tool when it’s not in use. Alright. [Snaps] Let’s do it. Sometimes when tiles are too big to cut them on my table saw I use this guide on my circular saw and it’s a lot easier to cut them down to more manageable sizes. In this case I cut down a piece of 1/8″ Melamine I had into three equal pieces to use for the back and the two sides. On the back I measured in from the bottom and from each side to figure out where to put the hole for the filter. Those lines were there to show me the area to cut out and I put a box fan behind it and a filter. But then I realized that I don’t really want the filter centred vertically and horizontally. I want it in a corner so that the paint booth can stand upright or on its side and the fan can be in the same position. You’ll see what I mean in a minute. Instead of centring it I use the same distance from this edge and from this edge and then I measured in to find the square that I want which is actually over here. So it’ll be offset a little bit in one corner. To start cutting the area out I used a drill in one corner and used my least my least favourite tool of all time the jigsaw to cut out the lines. This material is really thin and cheap and it doesn’t cut well and the jig saw doesn’t help as well. So I had to sand it down a little bit so it wasn’t rough to the touch but it really doesn’t matter what it looks like. I made sure that the filter fit before moving on. I cut down some more pieces of 1/8″ plywood – this is also scrap that I had – to use as the top and the bottom panels and I cut down a couple of pieces with the crosscut sled to act as flaps. You will see where these flaps are used later on. I cut down two pieces that were the same width and then ripped them in half on the table saw. I needed some really big hinges but rather than using piano hinges or something expensive I decided to use my leftover scrap material from my outdoor sink built. I measured the panels that I had already cut and used the height to cut down some strips of this material. The width of these strips doesn’t really matter at all I just wanted to make sure that it would cover the two pieces that it was gonna connect with. The rotary cutter works really well for cutting these and especially for the long straight edge. But you gotta be very careful. That thing is super sharp and I had it nick my finger one time. Not good. I cut down some smaller pieces to act as hinges in the other places as well. Both of the top and bottom pieces and for the flaps. Again – you’ll see the flaps in a little bit. Also I wasn’t worried about the freight edges at all because they gonna get covered up. I lined up the panels and then used some Barge contact cement to attach the hinge. This goes on two surfaces and once they touch they lock together. So the first surface here is this white area. You don’t want these white pieces to touch each other you wannna cover them with the hinge. As I was covering the area I realized how much cement I was gonna have to use to make all those hinges. I decided to go ahead and finish this one out but not to use it for the rest of them. I covered the fabric and the melamine and I let them both dry for about five minutes. I used an 1/8″ piece of wood as a spacer in between the two panels and then laid on the hinge. As soon as these touch they bind. So I immediately had a workable hinge. This isn’t really adding any strength here although I guess it doesn’t hurt. But really it was just to stop any stray fibres from falling off while I was painting. It also covers up some of that excess cement so that the two pieces won’t stick together when they accidentally come in contact. I did basically the same hinge on the other side but I used Super 77 which is a spray adhesive and it works the same way. You spray it on the two surfaces, let them dry and then when you touch them together they bond. Now overall this stuff is not quite as tough as Barge but in this case it actually held better than the Barge did. I covered this one with duct tape as well an I realized that if I wrapped it around the bottom of the panel it would actually help with strength a little bit. I just had to make a few cuts just to make sure the opening for the filter was there. To add the bottom panel I had to make one small adjustment. I used some Super 77 as well and did it on the hinge but before I put the panel in place I used two pieces of 1/8″ plywood to work as a spacer. This is because this piece is gonna la over the two side panels. So it needs to be a little bit further out. I covered the back side of this hinge with Gorilla tape and I realized that I should have been using that all along. Gorilla tape is just stickier and stronger than normal duct tape. Later on I went back and added Gorilla tape to the back of all of the hinges making sure they were in a closed position before I put the tape on. These flaps go on the two sides of the top and the bottom panels. They gonna help it actually hold together as a box in just a minute. These get folded in before that panel gets folded over. And last I needed a way to hold these panels into the shape of a box. So I decided on velcro. I got these adhesive backed panels in a fabric store. I put one side down on to the outer side of the flap. An then I laid the other side of the velcro on it but it didn’t pull off the plastic backing. Once I had four of these squares on each one of the flaps I pulled off the backing from all the squares. This stuff is really sticky and once it sticks you are not getting it off. So make sure to be really careful and lift it up the sides and get the flaps lift right in the place before I really pressed them down. When I pulled them away one side of the velcro stayed on the side panels and the other stayed on the flaps. the velcro held it into the box shape even when I lifted it up and flipped it around. It did a pretty good job. I hot glued on the filter just in case I needed to swap it out later. I laid it on its back and unfolded the whole thing just to see how flat it was in its final form and how easy it was to move it around. It’s really light weight, it sets up in about twenty seconds flat and it’s easy to stand either upright or put on its side. It’s a little bit big to carry out a door but since you can flatten it out it’s really easy to put it wherever you wanna use it. I intentionally didn’t attach the box fan because I wanna be able to use it for other things. But if you just set it up right at the filter it does its job just fine. And you can turn the box at its side and it also fits there. I finally got to spray some latex onto my sword prop. If you want to see what is next on that project be sure to check me out on Twitch.   2. I use cardboard boxes. Amazon Pantry sends me giant boxes twice a month and they work great for a disposable paint booth.

    yours is much nicer though.

  3. Interesting, but you need a lot more air flow. You are getting overspray drifting back over your head. That's kind of counter to the purpose of the booth.

  4. I'd assume this is mostly for overspray when using water based paints? It wouldn't do much for fumes when using spray paints and such without being vented or some type of charcoal filter.

  5. seems your fan is not enough .. saw lots of over spray coming out of the booth as you painted ur sword .. you need more suction, I use 8" duct exhaust fans.. two of them .. would prob be needed due to the height of your porta booth, but more of the paint would end up in the filter than in your lungs 🙂

  6. Great project with a professional video.. I liked the foldable aspects, so built one with some modifications to vent the fumes and overspray out a window……..

    Couple of modifications-

    1. I used a 70 cfpm bathroom blower fan with 2 filters that sits on top of the cabinet, so had to put the side flaps on the "outside" of the sides for structural reasons.
    (Velcro is great idea and works well).

    2. The fan and filters are in a small airtight plywood box that has a removable door so that the filters can be changed on a regular basis. (Base of the blower filter box is a larger piece of masonite with foam "window" strips around the filter opening to prevent air leakage).

    3. Fan blower is attached to a 4" dryer pipe that vents the filtered air out a near by window.
    (NOT good to suck the fumes and solvents into your lungs)

    4. Front of the spray booth has pegboard air inlet at the bottom, and a single door that can be attached after spraying. This way, air is channeled in a laminar flow pattern from bottom pegboard openings up through the booth, and out the filters to remove solvents and fumes that evolve during the drying process.

    5. My calculations are about 4.5 changes of air per minute (using box volume, and no load specifications of the bathroom fan). Not sure it will catch all of the paint overspray with large spray gun, but may work with aerosol rattle cans? You could Also place some large filter panels around back and sides of the spray booth to entrap overspray?

    Again great concept that works for limited space. I put some video clips together about making the filter box, modifying the side flaps with duct tape hinges and bungie cords, and demonstrating the laminar air flow if anyone wants more details. I should post it in a day or so, as I have less sophisticated video equipment and certainly not your level of photogenics…… Great job on your part…….

  7. If you had put the flaps on the outside, there would be less chance of your velcro getting shmoo on them from the paint.

  9. great idea. i have been looking at both the video's and there is much to say for both the designs. but i think i will use both the ideas to alter it a bit for myself. point is in my case i am working with metal objects that need to be spraypainted, and i loved the idea of being able to hang them in the spray booth als i am currently hanging them in my little shed / shop. as it allows to turn them while painting. however, with metal objects i need to make sure that the top and at least one of the longer sides is stonger to hold the weight.
    also i need to figure out if i can actally get a reasonaly priced box fan or not to big fan here in the netherlands, including a replaceble filter.

    but again. really love the idea on how you solved this. the fabric hinges also make sure that there are not to many 'open' corners where the paint can go through.

  10. Just curious, was there a reason you put the flaps on the inside and not the outside? If they went over the tops and velcro'd to the outside there would be no possible way for it to fall inside right? Not to mention you could even support a bit of weight if you hang objects…

    Either way I love this, and I'm totally building one. My mom makes small furniture items and dog beds and such and gets her over spray on everything lol

  11. When cutting melamine, I've found it useful to put some masking tape over where you are cutting. It stops it from chipping so much.

I will be making two…….one without the filters because I have been also looking for a plan to build a collapsible "hamster playground" big enough for a 10-yr old to sit in and play with her hamster while keeping it safe from escape.   24. Is the filter enough to catch all the fumes? I'm considering building something like this for a second bedroom workspace, but was wondering if an exhaust pipe is needed from the box fan to outside. Since I have an apartment, I'd like to avoid stinking up the building. Thanks!

I wish I had made this earlier, I'm on winter break from college right now (finally able to get back to my workbench), and since I don't currently have a way to paint indoors, I tried using plasti dip to seal my foam X-wing helmet outside (it's 22°F right now). It did not go well, and I may have to re-do the helmet if I can't salvage it with high-grit sanding and more plasti dip. By the time I make this, I'll have to go back to college for my spring semester, but I can say for a fact that if I had made this in advance, this could have prevented pretty much all the problems I'm having with the weather interfering with my painting right now.
    TL,DR: Don't plasti dip in winter or when the temperature is below what the paint can says, make this and use it instead. as always, great video, and I'm looking forward to whatever you make next!

    I watched your other paint booth video & you mention that you want to keep the flammable fumes from passing over the electric motor. How is that prevented for this booth? Does the filter catch that or would a charcoal filter help with that?

  28. I know you’ve said you’re not good real good at using a mask for dust and fumes, but spray adhesives are about the worst stuff to inhale. Would love to see you using a filter. Hopefully your new Velcro-style mask is working well

  29. Just finished build your folding paint booth. One modification I added, cut a 14"x14" hole in the top panel and hot glued in a piece of clear diffuser light panel. Works great for letting in more light from the florescent in my shop.
