HONEST Review of A-Level Maths, English Literature and Business

hello everyone my name is Nia welcome to the first ever video on my channel near on the gnomes today we're going to be doing an honest review of completing a level mathematics English literature and business in my only experience either the example wjc which means at the moment they're still split into a s and a-levels I also completed a s economics which was fine I got a C in the north in the exam and I found it ok it was my worst of my results so I dropped it I also did Welsh baccalaureate but I'll do the video on that and how angry it made me the whole two years but that's quite okay as for now I'm gonna timestamp the video into four sections so I'm gonna be talking about my experience with maths my experience with English literature my experience with business gonna discuss whether combining art and science subjects it's really a good idea and whether you should do it and my personal experience after doing it myself okay well enjoy the video write a level Maps okay I did I live well at GCSE maths right I got an a star in numeracy and an a star in maths but that was a GCSE and GCSE I mean it what I found it really hard actually at the end of the day like I could go I could sit there and go oh my goodness really easy but honestly I found really hard at the time it was to reset paper I mean I don't know I don't know if I do very well let's not worry about that anyway so well my preconceptions before going into a level maths well they were pretty dire because I was like oh oh it might be quite hard but I'm up for the challenge I'm fine I'm fine I was fine so that was a bit of an exaggeration right there but never mind never mind but I did know come into a love maths it was going to be hard and obviously they're gonna be people will go oh will further laughs is hard during chemistry is harder it pop yes probably but I found this really hard and personally I wouldn't say I'm that good at maths even though like I did the a-level I struggled quite a lot so right that's preconceptions out of the way now let's talk about my experience during a s so the first year I found it ok the exams though pretty bleak copy honest I managed to get a B overall which I was like I was so happy with but you've got remember right this was the first year the WJ C's new mat system because they wanted to make it I don't know they wanted to spice it up because obviously England was changing their a level system into just having a levels Ron a SNA a twos I don't know I don't know really whether I think that really messed up a bit because obviously if you do all the past papers you kind of literally know the order of all the questions but when you've got a new spec you kind of like oh oh and also even I don't know I don't think I'd put much like as much effort in as I did this year like especially when I started when I look back I didn't even do past papers like as many as I should have I probably did about three was really if you look back really isn't a very good idea like I know it's not the same spec but you've still got some try you know I mean so anyway in the exam I ended up missing out 30 marks right worth of questions I didn't even answer right so Barry I thought I don't know out of 120 that's a quarter of the marks I couldn't even possibly get because I didn't answer them I literally looked the questions and I was just like which is why I was really surprised and I managed to pull off my B but that was in pure as the statistics and mechanics which in Wales are combined into applied maths I found them a bit dodgy like I was off just like all but I think because it was the first year I managed just great by quite well you know I mean like I feel like if it had been an established specification I've done how I'd done it would have been a bit bleak anyway that doesn't matter so roll forward right I got a low being pure and a high B in applied so overall a be solid solid so I think the light and just changed because it's gone a bit dark move on we move on anyway so come to a – I was like oh I should probably resit pure some AAS so I was like ok fine fine fine fine and then I actually did some work which was a change for me I'll be frank but it was ok I think it was fine I Reese at the AAS maths this year right and I'm not being funny the examiners phone went off just during the exam and it was just like okay you know please this one it's so good anyway so a two months I do end up getting a math tutor like thank God like my maths teachers were brilliant they put on so many extra math sessions and stuff and I think without the extra help and you know having a tutor as well which I have done like okay this year I kind of feel confident this year not because I feel like I actually did well is because I actually answered it which is an upgrade from last year so we'll see how it goes during the applied exam this year there was like a helicopters of circling our exam hall for 30 minutes which basically meant that couldn't think during the exam so I sort of to try and get my point across that was really annoying me all this is annoying everyone because it got to the point where I literally couldn't answer any questions well yes other keep skipping through the wall just for like try and read in them for later on but um anyway so I did the questions and it was fine but the helicopter it was just ridiculous and apparently we're gonna get special consideration going on I think it's jcq who they're like exam moderator of the exam board do not I mean board and they said for a noise disruption during exam you could get up some 1% extra added to your marks anyway which equates to either 0.8 marks less than the mark or 1 point to UK's points for half an hour of not being able to think brilliant brilliant anyway fine I think overall I did find maths really hard I really appreciated all the help a GOx I feel like without that or or or base fine it's all good it's over now in terms of like what I think I might get for results it really depends on how well everyone else did because I feel like June is it's a bit easier because not being funny like a lot of people who are doing maths are planning on dropping it so like it's fine but whereas when it comes to a – you're kind of a bit more like mmm people are smart around me and I'm a bit simple I'm not but I'm a little bit it's fine it's okay anyway moving on that was brilliant wasn't it okay are we on roll yes or on a roll they even pause this no X Factor I wash X Factor years if you still watch X Factor what are you doing I like where's Got Talent I like a lot of reality TV shows I don't watch love Ireland and I never will right don't ask but yeah I mean I love reality TV but wait why we're talking – right stop it okay back to the video okay let's talk about English English literature right first of all preconceptions about doing English literature ailable I was like nope before I started I signed up to do it and then in the summer of year 11 I was like what am i doing no I hate English I hate English I hate it and I had a proper melt that I remember cuz I was in the park and I was just like ah no please no please no okay I ended up doing it because I'm sort of like what I did for a nap was annoying or AFC's so it's like well I may as well stick with it now I've already started whether that was a good idea I hope it was but anyway so my preconceptions were quite bleak as you can imagine my meltdown in the park really didn't help so in the first year we did two different sections so like overall obviously the a-level split into five so your first two is modules then you've got your coursework and then you've got your mob to a two exams I mean can I put it more simply no probably not anyway so right we did we did Jane Eyre we're Gillian Clarke poems we did D H Lawrence poems and we did Doctor Faustus now I don't know if you've ever tried reading doctor fastest bins bleak right it's really really really really really bleak it's about this man and he's like I sell my soul to the devil dude and then it's almost like ensure it's like yeah dude it's fine and then they drag him off to hell and he's like hey I wasn't expecting this what what so it made me really frustrated to read like and also I tried to read on holiday before I started year 12 didn't work because I just kept cuz I feel like the thing with English which you got to remember is you need to take things a bit more at face value when you first read them because like I was trying to read it and some of this stuff it was like oh do I have to quote it no I'm not a loser maybe I am but okay but I yeah I didn't like it didn't like it and I think if you try and read it too in-depth when you first read it especially when you just come up from GCSE I got what do I get I got an A in English literature GCSE which is fine which is pretty solid I mean come on it's alright but at the same time like I don't know what I've done better if I'd done better it do you know which have I've taken it I don't know either way we're going to discuss that later with them doing maths and English subjects together as a good idea because do I really know the answer no but should we have discussion yes cool Jane Eyre are quite liked I'll be honest I really did like Jane Eyre but the poems I don't know if you've ever tried to read a D H Lawrence poem it's the pomegranate one bit weird especially when you're how old sixteen seventeen bit weird if you wanna have a look google it I'm not reading next bit weird weird okay whatever I think we've established it was a bit weird but poet I mean overall I got B last year I was only a few marks – eh I feel like I could have done better if I'd done more work but anyway so come to a2 and we've got the coursework and if the coursework on The Great Gatsby and a tale for the time being at an put upon at l4 time being the worst book I've ever read if somebody wants you to read it beg them to not make business nixb torture I got about halfway through the book and I found it so bad I could not keep reading so I ended up having to listen to the audiobook to force myself to listen anyway I ended up doing my coursework on unreliable narrators but I don't know if you've read The Great Gatsby this one narrator right another character Jordan speaks for a brief minute but her talking and then the main narrator Nick just relaying what she says so his Nick's on is he under I'm unreliable great to know either way it makes it quite frustrated but I didn't really know what else to cuz I hated to tell for the time being so much I just couldn't really read it again and I tried but I just forgotten what had happened in the first half because I put off the second off for so long which as I said I ended up having to just listen to whatever anyway the rest of the exams were on Hamlet and it's been a brief minute does that even make sense no I don't think so and also the poems off Christina Rossetti and unseen poetry I harm the exam was really made me quite annoyed because the subject was on women and we've done women right in our mock so why did I bother learning anything else like I feel like I spent so much time learning everything else when women came up was like Oh luckily before I went into the exam a sheet fell out my back on women but that's not really good enough is it it's not good enough and literally my whole essay was just a massive ramble and then the extra question it was about like you know when I don't know if you've read Hamlet but it's like ooh quintessence of dust Oh Oh like Shh no one cares um it was on that but I've only talked about it first tough me extract some kind of it like oh so I don't know whether the first off is gonna go very well either way not worried it's gonna be fine it's okay it's so good I think I hope right and then as the Christina is at eight oh my gosh right if you're ever that bleak in your own life stop it can't um have a pint and get over yourself and that's what I'm gonna do if I fail English it's like didn't write down with them but it was something very similar I don't ask to be unseen poetry right okay so I know obviously I'm here to actually talk about how I found the a-levels when I was trying to do the unseen poetry in practice I couldn't I couldn't mentally do it like I tried my best but I get to about twenty minutes in and I would just be like do you know what these are not the poems that gonna come up in the exam so why should I bother but then in terms of actually preparing for Christina is a because obviously you have like a 20-minute extract question and that's basically you answer in just one of her poems and analyzing it and it alone and they give you 20 minutes to walk they don't give you 20 minutes but you have basically got 20 minutes to do that so I basically did all of those for every poem twice so I started at the beginning the year and I'd really recommend you do this if you're in a s or a – wherever you are in your educational journey do it or you're a fool because not only did it really sort of help me do the extra questions which I really was quite bad at but also it's all got the poems in my head so then when they had the questions come up I've stuff like again the theme of love came up why well context a set for love or back in the day people who sometimes used to marry just for convenience are so different so now with it right anyway so the exam got B and a s I'm hoping I'll might get an A in a two but merely because I'm a coursework because I redrafted it so many times if the teachers didn't give me a good mark after I asked this question that's fine Thank You teachers your gems okay anyway moving on we got business a level preconceptions for business a level are you simple why are you taking that each Tuvix item and then when you telling people you're like a nossa to business which is probably not a good outlook to do because my intentions in September are to go to university and do business so am i bit of an idiot for feeling not like it's Alyssa focus you hear people are like I'm going to like become a doctor and like I'm gonna go do business but the other day we've got on make our money we got to make our money money money we've gotta make heart pound coins right if you make one pound a coin at a time unless you get in them I don't know is that bad and if you get one every ten minutes that's minimum wage in it facts okay anyway right moving on preconceptions of business are you dumb are you stupid not because any always actually say in that but it was just in my own head I was like ah I think you say HD because it's not on the core list of subjects which doesn't make it a bad subject she got I think there's so many subjects like you know there's loads of subjects on that list so calm down it's fine not every subject is a core subject I'm I'm doing two core subjects which will bring me back to my point later on about doing maths and English is that a bad idea anyway more about that in a bit worry not warp right so preconceptions I stupid are you dumb and I kind of never got rid of that in my head like I really enjoyed it as mailable but I kind of I it's that nagging feeling I I know I'm just being stupid because the loads of people do it and I could easily sit here and go yeah I really like felt proud to be doing it because it isn't like I think there's a bit of a shame but I didn't like I feel like a bit silly like because especially like when people when you sat down doing your vision your um just revising like Oh corporate social responsibility at home so silly when you're not you're not silly if you do business fine it's okay it's all good we love it okay that's cleared up how did I actually find is gone a right so yes business basically GCSE put a bit more Heffley right so if you did GCSE business you've got a s in the bag good luck to you good luck you and me fine and a – you just have to recap a s and also learnt a bit more but I kind of feel like with business I never really understood how to revise like I kind of just wrote loads of notes tonight I mean like I just made so many notes to the point where I basically written out the spec but in detailed format so then whenever I was trying to revise and I forgotten something I just turned to that page but then I don't really know cuz I've never got on with flashcards never got on really with anything that wasn't know so lists because like I'm kind of person who would write schedule in the morning and by lunchtime get rid of it so if I'm trying to like do flashcards I'll start right in the flashcards and then by the afternoon I'll be like halfway through another like oh I shouldn't look over some of these and then I just like I'll go through about two and over like this really isn't helping I spent all morning writing these out but it's fine in terms of the a2 exams I really really really really messed up like I think unit three was fine because I'm quite I'm quite mad sakes like do edible maths so then when I have to just calculate net profit it kind of is a bit like yeah it's fine I'm so good but when you're doing unit 4 which is like a long essay I made a massive mistake because basically the unit 4 is split into two sections so you have like a study I was on Marks and Spencers yeah that's very posh isn't it and then we also had the essay section so 50 30 that's other marks are delegated so I did the question I need to meet to the question there made me so angry cuz I was like this mother flippin GCSE it was is profitability the most important like motive for a business I was like well sometimes most of the time ultimately they got make money to exist but they haven't got to make a profit they might have other things on the mic and I think I left two short times hopefully enough but that's not my worry so in the essay section you have two parts why does I care about three fingers discuss this at 30 marks so there sa parts 20 and then you have a 10 minutes off like explained question and I had to do a SWOT analysis on not SWOT analysis smart objectives for a new pizza restaurant how did I read it smart objectives for a pizza restaurant so I was like ah cut costs you know have a great time do this within three months you can tell that you've done this by blood bla bla then I realized the word new was in there and I was just like oh so I don't know hopefully you'll be fine but it was literally like a last two-minute cram and I read at the you can cram 10 marks into two minutes and also like even coming up with a smart objective like it's fine for when you're doing Welsh but you can sort of make it up around yourself but like I don't know I don't know I don't know hopefully I'll be fine I'll be fine anyway okay brilliant I think we've covered everything for those three subjects if you got any questions ask them down below I'm now gonna have an empty comment zone for cook it but yeah if anyone does ask any questions which I doubt they will I will answer them properly sometimes I don't get too many cuz I get popular now anyway right moving on can you be good at maths and English is it my idea to both right so in terms of doing both right my problem was obviously doing the three so the maths the English and the business and the business was not particularly like an English subject and it wasn't a particularly maxy subject so it wasn't really helping steer me in any particular direction I enjoyed doing it there so but yeah so I start anew right so if you do if you want to do like a math C engineering course quite often you need another science so we do English obviously that takes straight away from doing like a a science do you not I mean but then again obviously you could use your third option to do that and especially for me doing English it was kind of fine because you need like two humanities but if you do Welsh back you kind of do an essay if that makes sense it's kind of okay but at the same time like if I want to do something like English and they wanted to humanities subjects if you think vitae logically maths Welsh back in business they're not but obviously not Matt but the other two as well aren't particularly humanities traditional subjects so I don't really I don't really know and like I've read an article recently I think was with the Guardian I'll link it down below and they said there's a lot of people being stunned away from doing humanities subjects to his Dead pursue set just do stem stem but I don't know and I know this and I quite a divide between girls and boys doing science and that's what they say a lot but in my English class right there was two English classes and they had about 25 people in each and across both classes there was one boy so it does make you think well is it a girl thing is it a boy thing I don't I don't know and has that got anything to do with it but ultimately when you decide a few universities I would not be an ideal candidate for engineering and I would not be an ideal candidate to do English I do want to pursue doing business hire me but I don't really understand what I would do if I was like all of a sudden flip the switch and want to do maths or a flip switch and want to English because I kind of just haven't got the right skills like I feel like I've developed quite a well-rounded brain right this is which I like the doctors the other day and he was like oh would you do for a doubles then I went oh all I do maths and English and business and he went ah using both sides of your brain oh sure that's not thing let me know if it is a thing because I don't think it is but maybe it is maybe it isn't but either way right we talked about maths we talked about English if you want to do one of those right in particular do two subjects related to it right do a subject relate it to that so you can be like got that in the bag I was accept all five my universities but that is because I went to do business and at the end the day if you you can basically get in I think with most like well obviously with word with most qualifications for business but if I wanted to do maths or mechanical engineering I really would need in other science especially to get into the top universities I think you kind of just need to have some evidence that you got it in the bag and if you haven't that's fine but if say for example that you wanted to do math I don't know chemistry and English that we find because you've got two science subjects because that's the thing like even if you wanted to do that's what really annoys me actually if you want to do like a science II subject you've got to have two science subjects but like sometimes they'll include math sometimes they won't and then is it this literally changes for every uni for what is classified as a maths or science subject so really if you choose in your a-levels or your bags go into any levels and you like don't and you haven't got a desire like I didn't have a desire to do any particular English any particular maths course you'll be fine but if you do have that desire make sure you doing to similar subjects and you'll be absolutely fine brilliant okay well let me know any other thoughts you might have in the comments if you actually leave a comment are we quite impressed because it's my first video I'm really sorry if the light has been quite bad or if the audios been quite bad it's because I'm using a video camera who uses video cats see you all soon I hope you enjoy the video subscribe if you do like it because I'm going to at least the summer trying upload every Tuesday and Friday so see you later alligators and bye
