Fat Glazing – Blending Technique For Miniature Painting


Happy New Year! yay! Welcome back guys, this is part one of a new
series focusing on blending techniques. Today I’m looking at something I call fat
glazing. It’s a simple way to build up smooth transitions
fairly quickly. So on our pallette we have Averland Sunset Rhinox Hide Sunset Purple Now, this is from Scale Color but really you
can just use any purple you like. And finally, some white Take some of your yellow and lay down a solid
base colour, I recommend applying this in two to three thin coats. Ok so now, take some white and mix it into
your yellow, I usually create a little transition on the pallette so I can easily go back and
forth between different hues if I need to. We’re going to create a fat glaze, which is
essentially a paint consistency that is half way between a layer and a glaze. So approximately 2 parts water to 1 part paint. When you apply this to the model, sweep the
brush across the surface in the direction of the highlight. Notice how it creates a fairly smooth transition
in a single pass. You’ll have to experiment a little bit in
regards to paint consistency, not all paint is the same so it’s difficult to give an exact
ratio, but when you find it once you’ll be able to find it again, and after a while you’ll
just get a feel for it. So build up your highlight in a few passes,
each time taking lighter paint from the transition on your pallette. Next we’ll create a thin glaze with our Rhinox
Hide. Just take some of your paint and add a drop of water to it. To check the consistency you can use a paper
towel test. So to do this, just take a paper towel, put
some of the glaze on your brush and touch the tip against the towel. You’re going to
know you have the right consistency when the paint explodes away from the brush. Like this. Now simply glaze in the opposite direction.
Notice how little of the glaze is actually on the brush. You’re going to want to build this up over
a few layers. If you want to gild the lily you can add another
glaze, this time using purple. This is going to give you a more interesting
colour. So just to reiterate the idea, I’ll show that
again on this part of the shoulder here. So like you did before draw the paint up to
where you want the highlight. And just build this up over a few layers. We’ll add a little light glint here just to
make it more interesting. So what we’re going to do is just take our
brightest colour and paint a ‘T’ shape at the very edge here. Then we’re simply going to blur it out slightly
by glazing over the area using that same colour. For the shadow we’ll just go straight for
the purple this time, just to make it a bit more interesting. So again we’re using a thin glaze here and
we’re going to build this up over a few layers, making sure to let it dry between each pass. Alrighty! So that was a quick introduction
to fat glazing, hope fully you found it useful. Next video we’ll be looking at over glazing
where we’ll create a highlight without actually painting one. Which sounds a bit weird but it will make

  3. How do you know what colours to use for which? I'd not have jumped to using brown & purple for Yellow? I've got a colour wheel but I'm stumped. Is it just practise?

  4. +Kujo my man! This is a god send!!! My goodness thank you thank you!!! Can you tell me what dilution ratio you use for citadel paints & what you use for Vallejo paints? I'm guessing Vallejo is 1/1 and citadel is something like 2/1? With the 2 being water ofcourse

  5. Man, I wish I could get great results as fast as you do! How often do you apply this technique in your own painting? when you were mixing the white and the yellow, how did you thin it, with water on your brush?

  8. This is a very helpful demonstration. I've read similar insctructions several times but this is the first time it has actually clicked for me. One question, though; how long do you typically wait before applying another lighter highlight over the base coat or the previous highlight application? Do you let the miniature dry completely for any significant amount of time?

  14. Thanks mate, that’s absolutely brilliant ! Although not necessarily to obtain this effect, I’ve been using this technique and adapting my paint style to it, and for great results ! Using the brush to push the paint to where you want it to be the strongest simply is the best tip I’ve ever received for painting !!

Great video, but the problem ive always had, is that when doing this amount of water, my brush tends to pool into a droplet at the tip or swelling the brush so its no longer a point making it difficult to do anything like this, however I am using a GW cheaper synthetic brush. The surface tension of the water just seems to make this so difficult to get the consistency to do that without balling… was tempted to add a drop of soap as a surfactant

  16. I know that glazing consistency means the color will explode on a paper towel, but when we actually start painting do we also let the towel soak the glaze before placing it on the model or do we do it as is?

  17. Hi Kujo I have a bit of a technical question about glazes. what is the proper brush stroke for glazes? Should you use side of brush or can you use tip? Massive vodoo talks about it a bit on this page http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2009/12/tutorial-working-with-glazes.html.

  19. Hi! How thin are your base coats typically? How many times do you apply that base coat to get that smooth finish before moving on to glazing/layering?

  20. As a beginner this is invaluable info. Often times it easy to KNOW you need highlights and even where to put them but executing it and making it blend properly? Whole different story.

    When it comes to knowing what colours to use for the darker shades for blending, is there a specific theory or name to the technique I can do further reading on? I can see how purple is opposite the colour wheel, but I don't see a methodology at first (and second) that would lead to the brown.

    Obviously ( or maybe not! 😛 ) I know personally that yellow can deepen to brown, but it would be really cool if ther is something I could research to develop my personal understanding, so that I can venture off experimenting with colours on my own, without always looking for somebody elses work to copy off.
