While the true origins of giving apples to teachers isn’t entirely known throughout ancient history from Greek mythology to religious texts. Apples have been a symbol of knowledge and education. Some examples of more recent times in history where apples were given to teachers include as a payment for education to feed frontier teachers in early America where they would be housed with families of the children of they talk and by children of farmers to help teachers during the Great Depression. All of these have had some influence into the tradition of giving a teacher an apple at the start of the year as symbol of appreciation and gratitude.
