Children’s digital literature

I'm a postdoctoral fellow at the Catholic University of San Paolo and I research digital literature for children children's mainly making a digital literature a literary research it is not uncommon and the analysis will focus on the text so the main source of data so to speak of literary research tends to be in the literary artifact however we digital literature the participation of the reader is crucial for the construction of the story the story unfolds depending on how readers interact with it and it's crucial to me to observe video events unfolding in real time understanding how children or making sense of this narrative in which choices they were making therefore I observed young children four-year-olds with reading with their parents in a public library in UK digital to use literature is the multimodal texts a very complex one that includes steering moving images the the verbal text is written on the screen but is also spoken out loud often interpreted by actors there are there is usually a soundscape as well as sound effects so this complex multimodal configuration leads to very rich narrative and on top of that there are the meanings that are constructed through interactivity meanings that depend on the participation of the reader I wanted to make sure that I and my methods allow me to capture these complex form of meaning making you children's multimodal meaning making processes the main method of data collection was observation so I wanted to look at the readers look at their bodies look at their actions while they were reading as well as looking at the total narrative wasn't folding on the screen so for that initially is four cameras one from toe the eye level of the child another side camera also around the high children's gaze I used one camera that was mobile and focused on capturing what was happening on the screen and because it screen quickly I had tremendous flexibility and I also used a GoPro camera with the intention of capturing the movement of their body so I put this camera at ceiling of the library and I can copy it down and but for analysis I ended up reducing these data to central gears one of the new of the participants and one view of the screen observing the participants gave me a lot of information about their reactions their emotional responses and their participation their comments about the story they will give with their parents also how the parents would create the church this construction of the narrative however a lot of these many making processes are invisible and I wanted to have the opportunity to uncover this process further therefore icon I had I included two extra methods of data collection the second method of data collection was official method so I asked the children to make a drawing about the story and making a drawing about the story allow me to uncover a lot of their many making process of the visual text aspects that were highlighted in their experience with a piece of literature aspects of the characters that stood out but also some children created a narrative through their drawings and it was very important to talk to them as they were creating these drawings we will four-year-olds so it was always explicit what they were drawn however it was clear from these observations of their drawings and his conversations that every item that they added in their joy had a meaning behind it and it was important to understand what why they were including that and then Allah allowed me to understand several processes for instance how they understood their own participation in the narrative one child drew herself as part of the narrative so she put herself in the drawing because she said she helped this character in the narrative which was true therefore I showed how children were aware of their own participation in their role in this digital narratives the third method of data collection involved children reenacting story with finger puppets that I had created with the key elements in the story and this method was interesting in uncovering children's children making sense of movement in these narratives and also again on a children making sense of interactivity and on their role so one child every time he would enact one of the key actions of molarity he would tap the character because that would that's what he did in the digital era he taught the character and something happened these methods of data collection resulted in hours of very rich data therefore was it was a challenge to make sense of this data and to come up with strategies to analyze it and to be able to theorize what was going on in terms of children's meaning into literature I started with Josh Bessemer and Carrie Jarrett's proposal of steps for multi modal analysis however I had showed that these steps along the way to fit the reality of my own data the first step they proposed is called beta audience so in trying to make sense of date of the data in the general sense in my case I ended up turning to a more traditional form of description of the data so because I was working with literary text this scene was unimportant you need an analysis the unity that had start and a clear start in a clear and so I divided the defensing scenes and I made little descriptions of these scenes of this mini events started with very detailed descriptions and as I moved through I realized that these details were not relevant that this was this was going to show up more mimic waste through multimodal transcription later therefore I ended up synthesizing in in a few lines a few words the key aspects of each scene of doing events the second step is really later so it's really repeatedly the data and focusing on different aspects at each time for instance some movement and sound and verbal aspect of the data and trying to make to make sense of their and trying to notice patterns that would allow you to select the most meaningful moments of the data and in my case I included in this app was Jeff says is it it's I'm illogical use of transcription so I use transcription to make sense of the data is there was when I was doing notice viewing it seemed like there were so many important things that would happen in so many concepts from the literature that were showing up in the daytime and it was very difficult to select what was more most meaningful just seeing multiple facets of the same event or of the same phenomenon that I was observing therefore I use multimodal transcription to unfold the multi modality of this event and fold all this modes were used throughout the narrative and shifting from one moment for instance we're moving image was a crucial aspect of the narrative and in children work so to speak watching the text while in other moments they were acting so in what was most meaningful was their body engagement and interactions in their interactivity so I use the software you learn and I transcribed in layers all the molds that happen in the text but also all the modes of children's expression while reading so there is the proximity in relation to the device and direction to their parents their gains their actions so on and this was based on the work of the Green Norris and I selected some key scenes that seem more meaningful and I transcribed our participants readings of the same scene so the next step was actually having these broad things so I had embodiment I had emotion I had agency and then I turned into the backstage which was theoretical quality and in this theoretical coding I went again throughout the data and I selected then the scenes that were most relevant for each of these themes so then I had election of advancing the data where these things were showing up in a significant way and this was the first way of sampling the data when I had this collection on defense for each team and I had sure organized him I had to map their connections and saying what what what story they're telling about agency what can I say about agency by looking at these multiple events from my data then I use the method of a trade story of thematic networks should make sense of these events for each topic so I created a network for each of these things where I connected and I made the relationships between the different bits of the data and how they connect them and how they made sense as a whole and how they were informing my understanding of that after this analysis the final step was figuring out the form of transcription that would allow me to include these events and to represent the richness of this data in my theses and other publications as well as in many presentations and conferences so I developed another form of multimodal transcription that in this case would would serve what a jacket as Emma called the rhetorical finish function and I structure of a comic strip mixed with some conventions of traditional transcription so every frame would have the timestamp I would include everything that was said and I will include key actions so when children interacted with the screen this was real users represented not only through their the screen shot of direction but also to rely on that represented that form of interaction without any interaction with the screen sound and love not being is relevant so I made this choice of not representing sound and especially the soundtracks that were very rich in complex so unless in a certain event sound was very relevant I will not include in my transcription analysis process led to that so this one of these selections the decisions that you made and of course I would also include ah a screen shot oh yeah because the app was also changing moving into animation there was a lot going on so so here in the screen now you can see the result of one example of this form of multimodal transcription which I think in the end was crucial my discussions written form and into showing the richness of the data and it's showing the elements that led me to my key arguments and latitude the key theorization that I made about you just may be making with it teacher I'm having to dispose there were key references that I mentioned in this video as well as a link where you can download the pieces which summarizes the key findings from this research and please feel free to contact me through email or in form of contact and I'd be happy to talk about multimodal data analysis and multimodal transcription
