A few questions for Literary Agent Juliet Mushens

I'm really looking forward to meeting lots of new writers I signed someone a few months ago who I met originally at the festival of writing last summer and she went away and took lots of the advice on board that she'd received and turned in an absolutely brilliant manuscript so I'm hoping to find another one of those this year probably a gossip columnist I think there's something of recess leader about really I don't think that there is any such thing as a typical day when you're an agent it's an incredibly reactive job in a lot of ways responding to requests for manuscripts offers coming in manuscripts being received jackets for books coming in you also hate their jacket they take their edits so it's all about being reactive and everyday really the only thing they have in common is they're all very busy I think it's incredibly exciting when a writer turns in a new manuscript and you realize that this is something very special it doesn't happen very often but when you get that moment when you think this could be really big it's an amazing feeling I think coming to the festival in New York is a really good thing for writers for a couple of reasons I think that it provides me with a lot of editorial support that provides them with guidance on how to plot how to pitch and I think it introduces them to other like-minded people so they can feel more supported because writing can be very lonely and I hope as well that it also breaks down the barriers between writers and agents and they lose that sense the agents are terrifying beasts to be feared and actually realized that were just normal people like them and that we want to find exciting new material we want new writers we don't hate this I'll be doing a lot of one-to-ones first of all so if people are interested in hearing my honest but always helpful critique of their work they should definitely put in with me I'll also be doing slash pile live where people can pitch their work and get live feedback from me and other agents and and I'll also be hosting a workshop called from such power to success so I'll be using actual examples of cover letters from authors I received by the slash pile and talking them through which ones worked what I think needed to be improved on and I'll also be explaining the nuts and bolts of the process of how publishing works so what does it preempt how is an auction run what happens once you've signed with an agent they're really behind the scenes information about foreign rights film rights and how that works on a basic level
