2018 Teen Poetry Slam (Short Doc) | Youth Speaks

we're here in the building 22 years in a row to see amazing young people from across the Bay Area over 200 young people from everywhere across the babe Oakland San Francisco Hayward San Leandro Richmond Pacifica competed for six weeks to make it here tonight so tonight we're so excited to celebrate their voices celebrate their legacy and their continuum and give you at a spotlight to these twelve amazing young people it's like one of the best poetry shows in the entire Bay and we get to do it once a year about a year ago I see somebody that I know on this stage right here and I was like you know what I said I could do that you know I could put myself in that space I got something to say tonight April 14th is my junior prom and I'm here instead it wasn't exactly a hard decision to make I've been waiting for this about a month now I always have weekly writing workshops we've got bimonthly open mics some of the most important conversations happen in those writing circles have been in those workshops and then are brought to the center on these stages one of my favorite moments at every slam it's before we even get up on this stage is the circle that happens behind the scenes we do poet Huddle's we do like a lot of builders that's what makes us special and also like this connection that the poets are building that's where the community is build their boners and I think that that's that's that's pretty common with any stage yeah I'm really scared I'm gonna freeze in stage so I'm gonna give it everything I might even pray it's it's nerve-wracking because you know you're shaking and you're nervous because you know this is big it's a big theater and a big audience but you're also really excited like you've worked so hard for this moment so when the audience is super enthusiastic about your pond you know they're snapping or cheering really gives you like that kind of energy that you need to build and like really pour out whatever you have in this poem I think that they're also really really ready and they're really excited to share their stories in front of their family and in front of their community a lot of people get scared when they come down here they said we're on the stage performing in front of 2,000 people but when there's so much love in the building you really don't have to worry about that it's truly a safe space and I appreciate that I'm super excited to be working with the poet's that were on this stage tonight I am really excited to get into like the drills and the practices we're gonna be writing a lot we're gonna be writing every week hopefully every day we're gonna be editing a lot we're gonna be having a lot of important critical conversations we're gonna be pushing each other we're gonna be challenging what we're saying we're gonna be digging in deep I'm really excited to witness the transformation from today to like who the poets become by July when we head to Houston you
