Hi there! I’m Asuka111. This video I’m going to show you how do I measure a proportion for drawing human character. Most of you want to draw a human figure. Am I right? You need a basic understanding to draw it correctly. That’s how to measure character’s proportion.
It’s very important. Usually, we measure the proportion by Comparing character’s head to body height Something like.. 1:7, 1:6 There’s also proportions for each part of the body. It’s not hard to memorize this.
Let’s see the demo how do I do it. Let’s start with the front-facing view. First, I’ll setup the grid for measurement. Using “Grid” brush to do that. One block equals to one character’s head. Height is 7 heads so… One, two, three…. This is the height of character. Now we start with drawing head. To measure the body’s height We divide this line in half.
7 divide by 2 equals 3.5 heads. And here is the estimated mid-point. Draw shoulder line and hip line. Complete the body’s contour line. Torso part is slightly longer than pelvis part. Next, we’re going to measure leg and arm length. Divide the length from hip line to ground again in half. Just a rough estimation is fine. The midpoint is the knee. Arm length is from shoulder joint to hip line. There’s a joint at midpoint. And this is a generic proportion for human figure. There’re different proportions in each age. For young character, you can use 1:4~1:6 ratio We also measure the proportion horizontally. For a male character. Shoulder is wider than hip For a female character, hip is wider than shoulder. Something like that. -Draw character in three quarter view- Think about how is the posture first. Let’s try standing pose. Here’s my guessing line of body length. Now let’s measure the length using the head. And my finger like this. About right here. Draw should and hip line with a little bit of tilt. And then, draw the contour line. That’s it. Now we have body part. For the leg part. Same method.
Using my finger to roughly measure the length. Ground is around here. Make a mark. Knee is at midpoint from hip to ground. When you draw a human character.
Try to start drawing from body part first. And then legs and arms. If we start with arms or legs first. They might conceal the body part in some pose. It’s gonna be hard to draw the body structure like that. Ok let’s continue with arms. This is the completed figure sketch. We can adjust the pose before cleaning up the line. By using editing tool like this transform tool.
Try tweaking some posture around head area. Now it’s about cleaning up. Define the body’s form using this rough as a guideline. We can use simple geometry form To build the volume of the body. If we understand form really well. We can achieve 3d-depth effect
even we draw on 2d surface. Like this screen. And you can experiment with various proportions. To create an appealing character. I recommend to use reference photos
For studying body proportion. And that’s all! If you have any suggestion.. Feel free to leave your thought
